Actually, the relatively muted fan response to the cancellation of Enterprise goes to show that even dedicated Trekkies recognize the need for the franchise to take a break. But still, it will be sad not to have new Trek to look forward to every week. I'm a bit younger than you, and was raised by Trekkie parents, so with TNG's premiere in 1987, Star Trek has been a part of my life for literally as long as I can remember, and there's always been at least one series (even if a mediocre one) with new episodes airing.
